Case Study

Star Building Fire Prevention

When a Level 2 fire alarm was activated at Star Building in the early hours of the morning, the on-duty Applied Protection (AP) team responded immediately, coordinated with the relevant parties, investigated the source, and supported the safe resolution of the incident. The alarm was later confirmed to have been triggered by smoke from an overheated rice cooker, with no fire outbreak.

Project Overview

This incident took place during the night shift, when alarm activations require quick coordination and careful verification. The priority was to establish the cause of the alarm, ensure the building was safe, and follow the proper process before normal operations resumed.

When initial attempts to silence the alarm were unsuccessful, the team continued with the investigation and coordination process. It was later established that heavy smoke from Suriya Banana Leaf Restaurant, caused by an overheated rice cooker, had triggered the alarm. No open flame or fire outbreak was observed.

After SCDF attended the site, carried out its checks, and confirmed the area was safe, the fire alarm system was reset with the support of site personnel and the building management representative. Relevant records, alarm printouts, and photos were also documented.

Challenge

A fire alarm activation, especially after hours, must be treated seriously until the cause is confirmed. The team had to respond promptly, investigate the source, coordinate with building and emergency stakeholders, and avoid resetting the system prematurely.

Response

At about 2.20am, a Level 2 fire alarm was activated at Star Building. The on-duty officer, SO Anand, immediately informed SOE Kathir and proceeded to attend to the Fire Alarm Control Panel. The Fire Alarm Monitoring System was also notified.

Outcome

The incident was closed as a no-fire case after the site was inspected and declared safe. The alarm was addressed promptly, the source was identified, and the system was only reset after proper checks were completed.

What this indicident highlights

Incidents like this underline the importance of a measured response to alarm activations. Even when the cause turns out to be accidental, the situation still requires prompt action, proper escalation, clear communication, and documentation before the site can be safely cleared.
